If you’ve already started researching studying in Malaysia, chances are you’ve come across the term EMGS more than once. In a previous article, we covered the visa process through EMGS — but in this article, we’ll go deeper into what EMGS actually is, why its role is so central, and what services it offers beyond just visa matters.

Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) is a company fully owned by Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education, established on April 13, 2012. EMGS functions as a One-Stop Centre — a centralized service hub for all the administrative needs of international students studying at both public and private higher education institutions in Malaysia.
Its headquarters is located near the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) area, with an additional branch in Kuching, Sarawak.
EMGS has two major, interconnected functions.
First, managing the movement of international students in Malaysia, including facilitating the entire student visa process, from the eVAL application through to the issuance of the Student Pass.
Second, promoting Malaysia as a preferred international education destination, through various marketing activities, international education fairs, and promotional partnerships with Malaysian education institutions worldwide.
So EMGS isn’t just a “visa processing counter” — it’s also one of Malaysia’s key drivers in attracting international students from around the world.
This is a part many prospective students aren’t fully aware of. EMGS offers several additional services that are genuinely helpful, especially during the early days of arrival.
ISAC is a 24-hour welcome service that assists international students as soon as they land at a Malaysian airport, even before they go through immigration counters. EMGS staff will greet and accompany students — even if they arrive in the middle of the night — complete with food, drinks, and a welcoming kit.
Through EMGS’s official portal and app, you can monitor your visa application progress in real time, so you don’t have to guess how far along your application is.
Beyond visa matters, EMGS’s Experience Education Malaysia portal also provides information and optional services covering students’ practical needs, from SIM card packages and accommodation to transportation arrangements.
For international graduates who have completed their studies, EMGS also facilitates the Graduate Pass application — an additional permit that allows you to work in Malaysia for 12 months without needing sponsorship from a specific employer. This can be a valuable bridge if you want to gain work experience in Malaysia before returning home or continuing your career in another country.
With EMGS as a single centralized gateway, the student visa process in Malaysia becomes far more standardized compared to each university handling it independently in different ways. This helps ensure all international students go through a clear and consistent procedure.
Since EMGS works directly with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Immigration Department, and Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education, every process you go through with EMGS has a clear legal basis. This matters because it ensures your stay in Malaysia is legitimate and legally protected throughout your studies.
EMGS’s role doesn’t end once your Student Pass is issued. They remain involved in various administrative matters throughout your studies, including mandatory health insurance and the annual Student Pass renewal process.
To give you a sense of scale, as of March 2026, more than 13,000 Indonesian students were recorded as studying in Malaysia. This figure shows just how strong Indonesian students’ interest in Malaysia as a study destination is, and EMGS plays a key role in making sure all their administrative processes run smoothly.
Most universities, especially private ones, process their international student visa applications through the EMGS system. However, some public universities sometimes use a slightly different application pathway, coordinating directly with Malaysia’s Immigration Department. Because of this, it’s always best to ask your target university directly about the specific pathway they use.
Looking at its overall function, EMGS is really better understood as a partner supporting your study journey in Malaysia, rather than just an administrative hurdle you have to get through. From the airport welcome, to transparent visa tracking, to post-graduation work facilitation, EMGS plays a role that’s far broader than simply “the office that handles visas.”
